Our past week has been so outstanding I don't even know where to begin. When you next come to Hawaii, you really should dive Oahu. Our wrecks and reefs are so stuffed full of critters that even I still find stuff that blows me away each day.

Today we stumbled upon a lizard fish with a huge mouthful of an inflated puffer. The puffer was probably the size of a ping pong ball and his defense worked! A minute later, the lizard fish spit him out! So crazy to watch him swim off unharmed.....

Of course, scuba diving in Hawaii is not just for certified divers. True, we have some amazing wrecks such as the Seatiger, YO 257, Corsair and Mahi to name a few but our reefs just keep shining like the sun. Wanna See Some Sharks?

Say you have a group of 4 to 6 divers and everyone is pretty solid. Let's say you have dived most of the Hawaii dive sites from Shark's Cove to the Corsair. Let's even go further and say you are looking to do some off the grid type dives. Well, we have you covered.

With a group of 4 or more we can arrange passage on a one of a kind experience. We will load in around 9:30 on our custom luxury dive cruiser and head out to a secret spot to look for sharks. Under Water Wedding....

Last week we here at Kaimana Divers got to take part in a pretty cool event.

Robert and Ging met while attending a scuba conference about 6 years ago. As time went on they continued to date and enjoy dive trips together. It just so happened that the two would join as one on a special night in October here on the island of Oahu.

That's where we come in...... As a Rev in the great state of Hawaii, I was stoked when Ging called and asked me to set up her special day. She outlined her plans (white wetsuit, veil, gloves and bouquet) and I gave her a few of my ideas. Robert however, declined to wear the tuxedo T shirt on top of his wetsuit but looked stunning in his attire adorned with a manly flower pinned to the lapel of his BCD.

As we dropped down to find our "church" two turtles cruised by to escort us, almost as if they were part of the bridal party. Next up was the lovely bride all in white! Our ceremony was accomplished on a flip chart and we couldn't have asked for better conditions. After the couple said "I DO" it was off for a little tour!

The rest of the evening couldn't have gone better. A magical sunset and lots of cake and champaign. Big congrats to the two newlyweds...... will have a condensed video version of the ceremony uploaded soon!

One Epic Snap....

If you are an underwater photographer like me you know how tough it can be to get the perfect shot. Daily diving like we do is such an amazing experience but sometimes things don't quite line up like you want. Too much sun, not enough, visibility not quite right..... camera issues, battery problem and memory card malfunctions.

Then some days everything just clicks...... and you get an image like the one above. It's the one I have had in my mind for years and the one I will always cherish. I've probably seen on average 3 turtles per day for the past 6 years. They never get old and they are always full of such personality. This one couldn't help but grin it up for the camera and for that I say MAHALO!

I'm looking to schedule a number of photo friendly dives over the next few months. We'll start off by reviewing the basics of photography with the PADI Digital Underwater Photographer course and do a handful of dives with defined objectives. Looking forward to seeing you all out snapping away soon!

Dive Shop and New Courses!

Looking back on it all it has been a fun 5 years. Kaimana Divers was born in the summer of 2006 and has been taking root ever since. When I started offering small group scuba courses and guided dives here on Oahu I had no idea we would get to this point.

In Feb of 2011 we opened our new shop. Our location puts us right in the middle of everything. Close to our boat dives at Kewalo Basin and world class wrecks like the YO 257, San Pedro and Seatiger and just minutes from Waikiki. Our shop is small but we are excited to offer the full line of Oxy Cheq technical diving wings/backplates and harnesses as well as wetsuits from XCEL. It is also home to our training center. If you are a seasoned diver or just out for an first time intro dive this will be your HQ. We have tried to build a chill place to come and talk story, catch up on logbooks or identify that insane looking fish you saw on your dive. We hope you can come check it out sometime!

I've had the pleasure to bring 2 great instructors into the fold as well. Drew has been here for over a year now and is by far one of the most solid instructors on the island. He brings years of technical diving into the mix and has splashed down from Central America to Asia in his quest for global dive dominance. He will be developing our more advanced curriculum in the coming months including advanced nitrox, deep and wreck specialties as well as some intro to technical diving. More to come in the future....

Liv has the pure passion for the ocean and leads Oahu dive instructors in SPH (smiles per hour). Her passion for photography, the environment and the endemic species of Hawaii is the bees knees. Never one to back down from a challenge her dive resume includes Northern California and trips to the Caribbean. If fun is what you are into on a dive boat...... look no further than the lovely Liv.

Finally I wanted to personally thank every student, intro and fun diver we have had the pleasure of showing around. Remember, it's not us that takes you diving..... it's the other way around. You truly have made the past 5 years remarkable and your love and continued support has never been more evident than on our RAVES! page. I'm humbled by your generosity and consider every day in this business as a chance to make a new friend.

We look forward to many more years of memories and will continue to provide you the diver with the ultimate scuba experience here on Oahu. The Odd Couple:

I guess after 4000 dives here on Oahu, I can still be impressed on a daily basis. Maybe that's what keeps divers coming back. The trill of seeing something new or rare.....

This week at Sharks Cove I spotted this little fellow:

Above we have Pomacanthus Imperator or the Emperor Angelfish. According to Keoki and Yuko's Website They are extremely rare in our waters! SWEET.

A few days earlier on the Westside I was doing my dive thing when I stumbled upon a fish I haven't seen in years. Here we have the Bandit Angelfish. And though they are often seen in pairs, this one was on his or her own. We can only hope a suitable mate is found!

Would love to see you all out for an adventure soon..... you never know what will decide to join us.

Lots of Changes.....

Been some time since I last posted so I wanted to say ALOHA and tell you all about our big changes.

Things started to happen in Feb when we moved into our new digs. Many of you have stopped by to say aloha, but we are always waiting to show it off to anyone who will take a peek.

We are at 1020 Auahi Street (see Ward Farmers Market.... yes, with the big Green and White sign?)

We are 4 buildings back behind.... Building 4, Mauka side (that's mountain for you mainlanders) 3 doors down from Girls Who Surf. If you have been living here awhile, you are probably more familiar with Nordstrom Rack..... essentially, we are out their back door. Look for the sign that says Pacific Rim Contracting.... park on the KoKo Crater Coffee Roaster side, they never use their parking!

Tons of new tees, long sleeve tees and sweatshirts in too. Come take a look or grab an eco friendly stainless steel water bottle so we can stop dumping heaps and heaps of plastic into our oceans every year. Hats and visors are in the works too!

The classroom is shaping up as well and we have been so busy teaching and diving it's been a challenge to fit it all in. Did I mention Michelle and I are having a baby soon? That mean's Drew is in charge for the weeks and months to come..... you could do a lot worse if you end up with this guy on your dive boat.

Along with some tweaks and dings to the new place, we are trying to make it easier and faster for our friends around the world to keep in touch. I have decided to set up a Skype account for the shop....... User name is KaimanaDivers. Give us a call or video call and we'll give you a virtual tour!

We've taken on a cool new way to take credit cards as well. The device is called square and it can turn any smart phone into a visa machine. It's the size of a postage stamp and really rocks....... we can even bring it to the dive boats so you can pay with card next time but until we get a few backup units it lives at the shop.

Speaking of the shop, we can't wait to offer the finest gear for our customers. Should be carrying Xcel wetsuits here in a bit and may bring other lines in slowly. July Dives Sizzle.....

So many great dives going out these days....

First, big Mahalo to Blade and Anna who have stepped up to act as Dive Ninja's. These guys ROCK!

Sharks Cove has been a blast with a school of squid hanging in the shallows and some big Ulua in the caves. Jared and his pops Frank got to check it out last week along with Claire from the UK this past week.... gotta love summer time diving on the North Shore (We'll be up there grilling and diving next Sat the 31st).

Lots going on on the westside too with dives at Makaha Caverns and the Mahi Wreck. Meanwhile, turtles, frogfish and even a few sleepy white tip reef sharks have been joining in the fun here in town. Lastly we got a glimpse of a Monk Seal in Hawaii Kai last week. STOKED!

Man what a sweet run we have had lately. Just this past weekend we boarded the boat in Wainae and headed out for a 3 tanker. Lots to see too with black coral and critters galore at Makua Ledge. Off to Stars for a drift dive and then over to Makaha Caverns for fun with turtles.

A Week In The Life Of.....

Double Wreck Night Dive.....

So, last nigh we had an epic night dive on the West Side of Oahu...... so much cool stuff too. Our dusk dive was at the Deep LCU where divers Matt, Jason, Adolph and Kingsley got to drop in on some amazing critters. Check out these frogfish:

Matt spotted an octopus too and even thought the visibility wasn't the greatest we all maxed out our bottom time and headed back up just after the sun set. With an hour interval we chilled and chatted while the night took hold. Lots of stars and light wind helped pass the time and before you knew it we were tied up at the wreck of the Mahi. What an amazing spot for a night dive. Visibility was unreal and we saw so much cool stuff. Highlights include a sponge crab carrying a piece of the ship, several sleeping parrotfish and heaps of the usual damsels, butterflyfish and a really cool seastar.... check em out and see you in the blue, or black?

West Side, Town Side and Hawaii Kai!

Wow,

It's been an insane last week of diving. Tons of old friends stopping by to say ALOHA! Been diving a bit out on the Westside where we have checked out the wreck of the Mahi, Makaha Caverns and STARS. Lots of great critter encounters too with sharks, octopus, frogfish and dwarf morays.

Town wrecks have been good too with lots of turtles on the wrecks, eel a plenty and even little sharks! If you haven't dived the wreck of the Seatiger or the YO-257 yet, you haven't been to Oahu.

Finally the Corsair wreck has been pleasing divers for years here. This week we managed to see a broad stingray as well as an octopus and a turtle..... that never happens!

Summer Time!

It feels like summer. It's light earlier and stays light later. Water temps have bumped up a few degrees and now it's official. Today we dived the famous North Shore of Oahu for the first time this season. Ask any diver who has been to Oahu. They will probably tell you that to dive Shark's Cove is a must.

Zack, Rob and I had an Aloha Friday off so we decided to head up. We were greeted with no surf, flat surface condition, tons of sun and about the best visibility I have seen in my 5 years of diving the Cove. It always feels a little like homecoming to walk down the muddy path and past the sunbathers and snorklers. It also feels like we know something they don't..... how cool the cove looks from underneath!

The dance of light and shadows began at 11:43 AM. We snaked our way through familiar caverns and took our time lining up shots with our cameras. Tons of schooling sailfin tang and convict tang joined the crew. A few good sized chub and parrotfish darted in and out of sunspots while a school of goatfish hung lazily in midwater. Next up was a small turtle basking in the mid-day sun. All total we logged 67 minutes underwater and came up just as the afternoon rush began! Tacos in Haleiwa and a few laughs then back to town for a weekend full of diving.

Big Island Tsunami Diving....

Well, what a weekend. The Kaimana Dive Club loaded up and headed to Kona for the weekend. Friday we took in a shore dive at Place of Refuge and we were scheduled to dive Sat and Sun with Bottom Time Hawaii. Mother Nature had other plans.....

With the Tsunami Warning in effect for Sat AM our dives got wiped and we began packing up to head up the hill. Here's what we looked like while waiting for the "all clear"

The better part of Saturday we spent hanging out at the house we had rented and being bummed that we couldn't go diving. The crew wasn't all frowns though as some people headed out for coffee tours and walks around town. A few of us entertained ourselves by having some Pool Olympics.....

Finally by Sunday it was time to DIVE. With no 5am Tsunami Alarms waking us up we chowed a breakfast at the house and headed over to the harbor. Lots of excitement in the air and the sun was out making for some spectacular conditions! Here are some highlights from our day dives:

Big Mahalos to everyone for making the weekend so fun...... even though we weren't able to get two days of boat diving in, the company alone was worth the trip. For our next off island adventure I'm thinking Niihau.... August guys?

Always stoked to have new faces out diving and the past few weeks have been a rush!

Had Carter, Phil, Dana and Andras leading the St. Marys Crew for some dives during Jan Term....... Carter and Phil did tons of diving and have some good photos to show for it while Dana and Andras completed their Nitrox and Advanced Certs. CONGRATS!

We have seen a few whales getting closer and closer to shore. The other day we even had a wee one (only a few weeks old and a couple of hundred pounds!) doing ariel breaches for us. Now where was my camera for that?

Winter brings some strange elements to the islands. For example, early in December everyone here was buzzing because the surf was building and it looked like the Eddie Aikau tournament would be held at Waimea Bay. Big waves, insane surfers and tons of people swamped the North Shore for two epic days.

Meanwhile back down south our crew has been diving at fever pitch. So many folks visiting for the holidays and whales have been making their appearances almost daily. From massive spouts to spys and full breaches our Humpbacks are always showing off. Now when the south winds blow our water is rough up top..... not the case underneath.

Dive and Jive....

Wow. What a great few weeks of diving we have had over here on Oahu. As the surf pounded the North Shore with the biggest and best waves in 10 years our crew on the South Shore has had some memorable dives.

Maritza and Dave have been diving like rocks stars and have hit New Barge, Baby Barge, the wreck of the Seatiger and heaps of shallow dives. These two are naturals at finding critters too with turtles and sharks on almost everydive. Check out the new video on the right.

Today Steve, Suzanna, Laura and Jo had tons of fun playing with Octopus. Big congrats to Rajiv and Ashitha for completing their Open Water course. Finall, Mali and Evan flaunted their island style for Big Eric who was visiting from Alaska.... here are the highlights!

So many excellent dives lately and the conditions have been outstanding. Lots of visitors from all over too. We have had Koreans, Australians and Canadians to name a few as well as divers from California, Chicago and lots of locals!

Tons of great dives and divers out lately. November is off to a great start too with sightings of sharks, eagle rays, dragon moray eels, turtles, octopus and a few friendly frogfish. Check the photos below!

Big shout out to Luke and Susan who joined us from San Diego and knocked out their PADI Boat and Deep Specialties. Also, Zack and Drew representing the University of Hawaii completed their Advanced course recently so big ups to those boys.

This Week in Diving....

So many awesome dives this past week and tons of cool peeps to dive with too!

Karin and Marcel from Germany joined Marcel to do intro dives, Dan swam with turtles and dived the YO 257 with club diver Paul, Renee and Bob put in a 4 dive day while club divers Dan, Kim, Susanna, Doug and Shay teamed up with Brian and Uni to dive the Corsair wreck and Corner Pocket.

Sunday saw club divers Amy, Susanna, Zack, Travis and Rob joining Eric for some brilliant Westside diving. We hit Airplane Canyon and did a thrilling dive at Stars. Sun was shining and the crew was stoked!

This past week Jeff got his Open Water course completed and Christopher, Laura, Paul and Kathleen took some time off from their busy conference schedule to explore the wrecks and reefs off Waikiki. Today we took Eric and Matt on their first dives ever. By halfway through the second dives these guys looked like pros!

This has been a great week to be a dive instructor here on Oahu. We started off with a Club Dive on the Westside and had a "who's who" of Oahu dive junkies. Nav, Laura, Lauren, Josh, Doug, Melissa, Suzanna and Dave made tourist Johnathan feel right at home. Lots of fun stuff here too.... check out the pics.

Starting Monday I had a great crew of divers. Beth joined us from the mainland and hit charters up Mon, Tues and Thurs. She got to dive the Seatiger, YO 257 and the Corsair wreck..... can't go wrong with those! Also joining the Kaimana Divers crew this past week was Tom and Dianne. Tom is a dive instructor in the great NW and a fellow DUCK! Was great being back in the water with you guys..... shore dives this week?

Lots coming up the week of Sept 28th too..... we'll be splitting time between town and Hawaii Kai and diving Thurs, Fri, Sat and Sun. What are you waiting for, come get your dive on!

Palau to Ban Shark Fishing.....

This came across my desk this week and I'm happy to share it with you. Palau may be a small country but to anyone who dives it evokes images aplenty. Recently in a speech to the UN, Palau's president announced the creation of the world's first Shark Sanctuary

If you haven't been introduced to the horrific slaughter of the most critical species in the ocean please educate yourself with this quick read.

If you are more of a visual learner take a look at the shocking footage and subsequent trouble film maker Rob Stewart uncovered in his 2007 film Sharkwater.

Outraged? Me too.... follow this link to send a letter to your senators asking them to support the Shark Conservation Act.

It is my hope that the sharks that have survived for 400 million years will not be wiped out in a matter of generations for something as trivial, and possibly unhealthy as shark fin soup. If you really want to take a stand, walk out of any restaurant that serves the stuff and make sure you raise hell as you do it.

Oahu Diving.... Epic as usual!

Tons of great dives here on Oahu lately. Bryan from Texas returned with his boys so we did an intro with them while they weren't busy tearing up Waikiki.

He was out last year visiting Honolulu for some diving and did his Nitrox and Advanced Courses. We got some sick dives in at the YO257 with Big Island boy Rocky..... here are the photos.... CHEE HOO!

Gear Review.... Omega Amphibian Fins.

OK, so if you have been diving with Kaimana Divers in the past few months you have no doubt noticed that I am sporting a pair of fins that are a little odd to say the least.

The fins are the first of their kind and though I jokingly refer to them as my Optimus Prime fins because of their Transformer like appearance, I thought I would post a little review.

The Omega Aquatics Website does a pretty good job of explaining why their fins are the future of diving, but how do they dive? Well, I'm here to report that they take a little getting used to but overall are amazing!

The foot pocket of the Amphibian is comfortable and the straps are easy to click and unclick. The real magic of the fin is the hinge and blade set up. With a simple movement of the opposite heel you can unlock the fin and it will flip up against your shin. This makes moving around a dive boat and getting on a ladder in rough seas a cinch.

Now I wouldn't recommend these for shore diving but could see the use in a rough sea entrance where you might want to free up your hands. Need more convincing? Check this list out: 25 Reasons Why

Finally, the only thing that takes some getting used to is using a full scissor kick. If you need to kick hard into current or go chasing after something quickly they may snap out of position at the wrong time. I've negated this by exclusively using a frog kick and am doing just fine!

Insane diving and tons of SHARKS!

Oahu diving has really put its best foot forward. So many people joining us I don't even know where to begin. In the past few weeks alone we have dived Sharks Cove, Baby Barge, Fantasy Reef, China Wall, Sea Cave, Fish Curtains, Corner Pocket, the wrecks of the Corsair, YO-257, Seatiger and Horseshoe Reef, Ewa Reef and Turtle Canyons.

Turtles doing their sleepy thing, Frogfish on patrol everywhere, white-tip reef sharks on almost every dive, spotted eagle rays doing flybys. It has just been off the chain. I love my job so much! Here's why....

Awesome dives the past few days....

Kingsley and Ashley completed their open water course and this morning Anna, Mike and I headed out to dive the Corsair and China Wall. Great vis at the airplane wreck and two leaf scorpionfish. Over at the wall we lucked out and found a Dragon Moray! Check it out....

Big shout outs to Greg, Dan and Kim for completing their Open Water course. We had a blast with these guys too and though Greg is heading back to Florida, the Hawaii Ohana will be seeing tons of Dan and Kim (congrats on the engagement too!)

Finally, Mike has had some outstanding dives to put in his logbook too. Last week we hit up the wreck of the Seatiger and Horseshoe Reef then headed up to North Shore to dive Sharks Cove and finally finished up out in Hawaii Kai. Here he is in action!

New Dogs, Old Tricks.

Something special happens when you take out friends and family. Diving is one of those rare activities that is just pure magic to begin with, but add some great amigos and it just rounds out the experience.

This past week has been no exception. Downing and his wife Carol visited from Portland. These guys did choke dives! North Shore, Night Dives, Wreck Dives and Drift Dives..... you name it and these two dived it. It was awesome meeting the whole family and man is that North Shore Shrimp at Romy's ONO!

Lately I've had the company of Melissa from Canada and Ed and Jim (Oldschool Oregon pals). Leandro from Japan finished his Advanced Course and Glen and Cheryl joined us for a night dive. Divemaster Anna made an appearance too.

What a great way to start July....

Tons of dives lately. In the past few weeks we have hit so many sites! This week was a reunion of sorts as my long lost pal James breezed through town. Here we are at Three Tables yesterday (thanks to Brendan for the photo)

Lots of people in town taking advantage of the diving too. Brendan is in from the Great Northwest and got to join Zack, Adina and Brian. Zack made a dive trip out here last year and liked it so much he moved out here. Brian and Adina are just stoked they have a friend who lives in Hawaii they can come visit.

We also had a great day on the water with Inga from Germany and Melany from Canada. These girls rocked and were so stoked to dive into the clear Pacific waters, feel the sunshine on their faces and play with turtles!

Big congrats to hand out too..... Jay is Kaimana Divers newest Divemaster while Celeste completed her Advanced Open Water course and Amy and Jamie did their PADI Open Water Course. These guys had tons of great dives with frogfish, octopus and even a great session with some eagle rays. Never a bad dive here on Oahu.

Many thanks to everyone who has dived lately. We have had a really good run of fantastic people from all over. Just goes to show divers are the best kind of people!

Gettin our Dive ON!

Wow....

So much fun out there lately. June has been a banner month for diving and tons of folks have been taking advantage of the great weather and great vibes. A few weeks ago we had another amazing turn out for our Sharks Cove summer kickoff.

The best part of diving here on Oahu is the variety. No matter how many times you have dived a site, you always find something new and our Sharks Cove dives were no exception! I found so many nudibranchs I have never seen before.... guess it's up to Anna to figure em all out.

Lots of good Wreck diving too with octopus and eels, nudibranch and frogfish and slipper lobsters and turtles all over the Seatiger. Last week I caught 4 spotted eagle rays swimming in formation around the wreck too!

Gotta give some thanks to club members Paul, Jay and Travis. Jay is almost pau with his Divemaster course and cooks a mean burger. Travis had his parents out for the weekend and took them out for an intro dive and a day at the cove. Way to go Susan and Bill! Paul has taken some time away from the library to dive and has really been spoiled with private charters.....

Finally, Brian and Kathy dived with me last week and these guys ruled. Lots of variety too as we dived the Seatiger Wreck, Corsair Wreck, Horseshoe Reef and Koko Craters. Great having you both out.... enjoy the Big Island!

Next time I write we will have 5 new Open Water Certs, but for now shout outs to Dave and Susanna for completing their course-work this weekend. Now time for Advanced Class you two?

Shore Dives, Sharks and Students!

Lots going on these days. Both Jak and Alix finished up their Advanced Open Water course with Deep Dives on the Sea Tiger and the YO 257. Monday the weather was perfect so Steve, Justin and Jeff joined me for two tanks up at Sharks Cove.

Gotta love summertime and so much to see. Yellow Head Moray at the Seatiger, 3 frogfish, 3 sharks, turtles, eagle rays, octopus, spanish dancer, fuscia flatworm, titan scorpionfish, juvenile frogfish and the list goes on and on.

Waikiki Diving still some of the best around!

Aloha Everyone,

So many great dives over the past few weeks and tons of great divers too! The Vu boys were out from the mainland and they rocked their Advanced Course as well as the Nitrox course. Tons of great dives too from sharks on the San Pedro and frogfish on the Seatiger, it seemed like everyday these boys had something cool to put in their log book.

This past weekend, Jak and Alix got started on their Advanced Course too. Great progress on every dive as these ladies knocked out their Wreck, Peak Performance Buoyancy and Navigation dives all in one day.

Finally, this week the conditions on North Shore look epic. I'm looking forward to booking some dives up there so if anyone is in the shore diving mood, let me know!

April Dives Rock.... Bring on the SUMMER!

So many crazy dives last month! Whales seemed to be present on every dive. Either on the surface or singing off in the distance. What made it even more epic is that everyone that was diving was rock solid.

Summer is just around the corner, which means diving on the North Shore! As great as spring has been out on the Westside, diving the townside sites and exploring the reefs, wrecks and walls of Hawaii Kai, anyone who dives Oahu will tell you they love shore diving North Shore.

I've decided to set up a Sharks Cove Day for Sunday May 17th. More details to follow, but plenty of pictures from our past days to keep you all stoked!

Back In The Saddle!

Aloha Everyone....

Great to be back diving Hawaii. Monday started out with Dive Club Rock-Stars Jay and Paul joining us for an AM charter to the YO-257 Wreck. Also along for the adventure was David from Texas. David was enjoying a little family vacation, but decided to get some dives in and what an epic morning.

With the crew loaded up on the Kahala Kai, light winds and a super flat sea we made the quick trip out to the wreck of the YO-257. Awesome dive with tons of critters. We had a good swim on a whitetip shark and David got a chance to dial in his camera with several turtles, nudibranch and eels.

Amazing second dive too at Turtle Canyons.... Great visibility and a nice long profile helped us see at least 8 or 9 of these bad boys!

David had such a great time he decided to book a dive today too! Awesome set of dives in Hawaii Kai. Not so much in the way of sun today but a killer dive on the Corsair wreck. Plenty of hawkfish to be seen and our second dive as Sea Cave rocked the house. Check out the photos and let Kaimana Divers organize your next dive trip!

Takes all kinds....

Some weekends are just funny...

For instance, this past week we had some rough conditions out on the Westside, but a great dive at Ulua Cave. Anna spotted a long-nose hawkfish while my crew got to see a good sized turtle and a dwarf moray. Big thanks to Captain Scotty and the Hapa and to Josh, Lauren, Randy, Mat, Holly and Anna.

For MLK Monday, Ski joined me with Mat, Travis, Wolf and a few more Armed Service Members (thanks for serving boys). Conditions were perfect for diving with great vis, no wind and amazingly calm seas.

Our highlights included a curious monk seal at the Sea Cave and an awesome Drift Dive at Palea Point. Here are a few of Mat's images from the dive:

Dolphin Frenzy!

It has been a good past few days.

Yesterday on the Kahala Kai we were treated with a mass movement of spinner dolphins. They came past our boat on a crystal clear morning and even hung around for a few minutes... Captain Carl is trying to teach Buddy the Dog how to bark at the Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins but no luck so far

However the true highlight of the weekend was Sunday in Hawaii Kai. Mat, Nav and I were thrilled to be in the water with this amazing pod. Big Mahalos to Mat for the video!

Gotta love January diving..... one of the best months to dive Hawaii. Did I mention that the whales have been around? Get your dive on!

New Year..... Selling All Gear!

Though the weather has been a bit frightful we have had some pretty amazing dives. Just yesterday we swam with a pod of dolphins for about 5 minutes!!! SICK!

Diving Cougars.....

No, not what you think...

We had a huge group of WSU Cougars in town for the UH vs. Washington State Game. And the best part is they were awesome!

Meg and Co. were stoked to try out diving and a few of them came out for a shark cage adventure on Monday with our friends at North Shore Shark Adventures Here is a great shot Anna got while we were rocking and rolling in the cage with over 20 Galapagos Sharks!

Not only can these Cougars cruise with sharks, but they also hang pretty tough when it comes to scuba diving. We had a blast on Friday and here is the crew gearing up....

It was a great set of dives too and it sounds like the gang will be working on their PADI Open Water courses so they can dive like crazy on their next trip to Cozumel. Such a great way to introduce them to the Ocean. We had two killer dives complete with a White Tip Reef Shark and a friendly little Octopus.

Big thanks to Chris for all of his help and the friendly crew on the Kahala Kai. Brian, Becca, Meg, John, Jeri, Shasta, Chad and Darin.... you guys rock! Big Shakas and Mahalos to you all! Thanks so much for a great day out diving guys and an awesome Thanksgiving. Enjoy the photos:

November to Remember!

What an awesome month of diving we have had here at Kaimana Divers.... So many thanks should be given to everyone who has been out diving on this Gobble Gobble day!

It really is amazing to think that on every dive we have seen new critters and made new friends along the way. Dive Club members Travis, Wolf, Steve, Anna, Mat, Paul, Greg, Amber, Katie, Josh, Lauren, Randy, Becky, Jamie, Matt, Laura, Holly, Nav and Jak have all been out for at least one dive this month!

What is that strange brown and white four legged one in the photo above you ask? Well, it's Captain Carl's new boat pooch buddy. We are looking forward to this one growing up on the Kahala Kai and learning to spot dolphins. Come out to meet the newest member of the team "Buddy"

Great sightings too with tons of frogfish, eel, dolphin, octopus, turtles, eagle rays and a recent humpback whale out on the Westside. Winter is now officially here as our whales are back so that is always a bonus.

We have also had some great guests to our island. Wes is back from 5 weeks in Cambodia and Ted is joining us for some sun, surf and scuba after escaping the harsh Jersey weather. We have had a whole crew of divers from Washington State and New Orleans, Vijay from Boston, Rob from Iowa, Kevin from LA, Lisa from OH--IO, Terry and Becca from Australia and a newly certified diver in Ian the Iguana to name a few.

Congrats to all who have completed PADI Open Water Courses and Intro Dives.... now let's get out there and keep logging dives!

Spooky Underwater Critters.....

With my favorite holiday just around the bend I thought I should share some ghoulish creatures for everyone. Who knows.... we just might see some spooky half-octopus, half-dive instructors out there in Waikiki this year.

Our last few weeks have been amazing. So many good dives to the Corsair, Mahi, the Deep LCU, Seatiger Wreck, Kewalo Pipe, Sea Cave, Bamboo Ridge, Spitting Caves and Horseshoe Reef to name a few.

Here is a nice vid Josh took today of the creepiest Octopus I have ever seen....

Aloha Everyone,

I feel like the past few months has just flown by. In that time, we at Kaimana Divers have logged some outstanding dives. Our Dive Club has almost 35 members and our club dives have been off the hook!

Lots of new certifications here on Oahu too. Plenty of folks taking advantage of the excellent summer conditions to get their Open Water, Advanced Open Water and Nitrox.

Things are starting to look great on the South Shore too. Over the past weekend, the Kaimana Divers All-Stars visited the wrecks of the YO 257, Seatiger and the San Pedro. Lots of great critters here too with spotted eagle rays, frogfish, moray eel and even a Dragon Moray Eel!

Aloha Everyone,

What a great few weeks of diving here on Oahu. So many new friends out diving and the best part about it is that there were so many cool critters.

First, I wanted to say thanks to everyone who has been diving with Kaimana Divers. We started off with Gabby and her brother Migel. These two are both Active Duty Military and were taking some time to enjoy the Hawaiian waters before heading back to work.... thanks for serving you two and mahalo for diving!

Next up, a small but tough group of guys joined Nicola and I on the North Shore for a Sunday of raindrops and great dives. Good thing it wasn't raining while we had the BBQ rolling. Big thanks to Ryan, Doug, Wolf and Trav for storming Sharks Cove!

Jason and Sarah came into town next and had some great dives on the Waikiki sites. Sarah may not be a fan of boats, but she rocked underwater.... Great diving with you both!

Ann Marie brought her logbook of 450+ dives with her and kept us company for the rest of the week. We dived the Corsair, YO 257, Seatiger, Kewalo Pipe, Horseshoe Reef, Sharks Cove and Turtle Canyons. This one is a FISH! Our biggest spot included a Dragon Moray at the Pipe and this amazing Red Hawaiian Lionfish. Big thanks to Ann Marie for the photos and the beef jerkey!

Long-time Kaimana Friend Jonathan was also in the HOUSE. This guy will dive anytime, anywhere. We managed to get two dives in at the Haleiwa Trench a full 4-dive day out of Kewalo Basin and an incredible night dive at Sharks Cove... how bout this for a shore entry? Flat like a LAKE!

Tons of great critters at the Haleiwa Trench. Last Friday during a day dive we spotted a MANTA RAY (agggh, no camera). It was Amy's wedding day and other than her hubby Ken, that's all she wanted to see. Cool when the ocean cooperates.

Here are a few more snaps from the Trench... The octopus in the photo couldn't have been any bigger than a silver dollar and peep that mini frogfish!

What a massive few weeks of diving. Thanks so much for taking us out!

An Epic Week of Diving....

Aloha Everyone,

After a great weekend on the Big Island I came back to Oahu and was greeted with smiling faces, tons of sun and great diving. I wanted to say thanks to the good folks at Jacks Diving Locker, Joe Mango and Steve Five for all the great dives. Best birthday weekend ever and big mahalos to the lovely Michelle too!

Scott and Sonia from Florida and amazingly, dive ninja Nicola's hometown in the UK respectively, joined us on Tuesday to dive on the Seatiger. These two got to see a show out on their first dive including a spotted eagle ray and a frogfish. The following day we made our way to the North Shore and dived Three Tables. Aside from forgetting my compass, we had a blast and they even brought us lunch. Thanks again you two.... hope you had a great time in Maui!

The following day Kiel, Lara, David and Nicola all jumped in on China Wall and what do we see a few minutes into our dive but our resident endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal. She's getting big too.... maybe she's preggers? Thanks again for lunch Lara, I hope you guys never forget that dive.

I also wanted to say thanks to Lachlan, Chika and Peter for joining us on Friday and the awesome duo of Lauren and Josh for getting their Open Water course started over the weekend. Sunday was a hot one and the Dive Club enjoyed a double wreck dive on the westside. First we hit the Mahi shipwreck and then headed over to the LCU where we found a shark! Oh, and since it's Shark Week on Discovery Channel, how fitting.

Finally big thanks to our SoCal earthquake crew Walter, Cynthia, Randy, Amanda and Mandy for doing their first scuba dives. Remember, you don't need to be certified to go scuba diving, just book a PADI intro dive today!

Summer Sizzles and Dives Rock!

Lots going on in the past week....

We had to say goodbye to Judd who logged 55 dives in 6 weeks here on Oahu. Not too bad for a guy who had only done a few dives before arriving. Hopefully he will get to take in a Red Sox game before he's off to grad school in Texas. Thanks so much for all the help this summer bro.

Nainoa completed his Open Water Course, and we made some new friends with Doug joining FOKD (Friends of Kaimana Divers), our Dive Club and Bob from DC diving the Seatiger wreck and YO 257. Also, we had an awesome Westside Club Dive on Sunday.

Diving with so many great divers has many benefits. For one, I can focus on taking snaps of critters I just can't seem to get a good photo of. Below are images of leaf scorpionfish, a juvi titan scorpionfish, morish idol and even a filefish: Enjoy!

The Heat is ON!

Wow,

We are really feeling it here in the Islands with temps pushing 90 by Friday. I guess it's not so bad when you go out scuba diving with a bunch of cool divers and brilliant 75deg water though!

In the past week, we have had the fortune of gaining a new aspiring Dive Master (come meet Nicola from the UK) as well as getting Dive Ninja Judd up over 40 dives!

Did I mention Judd also rips on the fiddle?

In addition to all this madness, Nainoa is jamming his way through the Open Water Course and he's only 13!!! His dive buddy Amber is rocking too.... we had some great dives with these guys both at Shark's Cove and out of Kewalo Basin.

Ryan started his Advanced Open Water course on Saturday with a trip to the wreck of the YO 257. Right off the shores of Waikiki this baby showed us her best and we got to do a second tank there too with a nice hour surface interval. Who said we do just one wreck dive a day?

Here are a few shots from the past week. Big congrats to Jessica, Kathy, Mike, Chris, Mark and Jesus for completing their PADI Discover Scuba Dive. First time in the water and they looked like pros!

Big thanks to Mat and Nav for taking me on a fun dive on Sunday..... 82 minutes at Three Tables and still 500psi in the tank! I love summer time...

Aloha everyone,

Looking back I can't believe I have been running Kaimana Divers for almost two years now. What started as a handful of divers has grown into a club full of amazingly talented divers. From photography to free diving and everywhere in between it has been a great run.

This past weekend we all gathered at Sharks Cove for a shore dive and BBQ. I'm pretty sure I'm going to need a bigger truck if Judd and I keep packing it like this...

Joining the group were the next generation of divers..... meet Aiden and his mommy Amy and Myla and her grandma Inika!

Before hitting Sharks Cove, the crew had tons of amazing dives. Last weekend we headed out to Hawaii Kai and dived on the secret spot of Area 454 and Fantasy Reef. What a great way for Steve and Nikki to finish up their week of diving.

We also got to see Jim and Steph who were out celebrating their new engagement.... congrats you two! Big congrats to Wei for finishing his Open Water Certification.

Computer Issues....

About a month back I wrote that there were no images being attached to my blog because of a swamped dive camera. Now, just when I get the cam back up and running my laptop crashes! AHHHH!

So, this blog is dedicated to those who have completed certifications recently and have not been given their props. First, Wes and Judd have been killing it. Both finished thier Open Water, Advanced Open Water and Nitrox courses. These guys rock! Also, congrats to Nichole who cramed in 8 dives on her vacation and is now an Advanced Open Water Diver....

A great way to start the summer!

Aloha Everyone,

Greet few weeks of diving here on Oahu. Lots of new faces and some loyal Oahu scuba divers too. I guest one of the coolest thing about having a small scuba company in Hawaii is getting to know everyone on a first name basis. This week we have had 3 great students in Wes, Judd and Arthur.

I can't think of a better set of dives for these boys either. We have had multiple shark sighting with a small little pup keeping us company on Kewalo Pipe (he's hiding... and I know where he is) also several frogfish and even a pod of spinner dolphins!

Aloha Everyone,

What a great few weeks of scuba diving we have had here on Oahu. Hawaii scuba diving has a way of throwing you something new each time you go out and lately has been no exception. There have been tons of visitors to Waikiki lately all getting a jump on summer vacation and it has been great to share my passion with them.

Zack and Craig kicked it all off a few weeks ago. These two hail from the Northeast and Zach has logged several dives around the world. What better way to introduce his friend to diving than a scuba trip to Hawaii? Good choice, bro and what an amazing series of dives we had.

From octopus, sharks, frogfish to eagle rays, schools of barracuda to turtles around every corner it seemed like these guys were my good luck charm! Craig did great with his Open Water course and managed to get some hiking in too. Thanks again for diving with Kaimana Divers boys.

Sadly, the Kaimana Crew had to say goodbye to some good friends this week as we bid Chris and Holly aloha. He's moving back to the mainland and was the FIRST OPEN WATER STUDENT I certified two years ago when I started the company. Holly has been going crazy with the Dive Club and was on our trip to the Big Island this past spring. Good luck getting back into the mainland flow and sweet dreams of all things underwater you two.... can't wait to see you back here in da islands!

I also wanted to congratulate locals Leilani and Sasha. These ladies rocked on their intro dives last week and are looking to do more. Below you will find a photo of Canada Jay with Leilani. Remember ladies, I have TWO Open Water courses this month so let me know how your schedules work out. Oh and I almost forgot.... congrats to Travis and Wolf who finished up their PADI Open Water courses too. Great work boys and thanks for making it up to Sharks Cove this past weekend!

Long Time no Blog...

Hey Everyone,

Some of you have noticed there have been few underwater photos lately. Unfortunately this is because my trusty Olympus Stylus 750 met its maker on a Bachelor fishing trip last week. Bummer too because there were some good shots of the Monk Seal we saw on China Wall as well as some other gems...

Not to fear. A replacement has arrived and just in time to take Travis and Wolf out for their final dives of their Open Water course.

The conditions the past week have been amazing too. Flat up top and great visibility down below. Last week we had 100+ foot vis on nearly every dive!

Below you will see some snaps of a resident Yellowmargain Moray and our Huge Frogfish that lives at Kewalo Pipe.

Open Water, Advanced Open Water and Nitrox Certs...

What a crazy busy weekend it has been. I know it's Wednesday now but this week, I've been going non-stop.

First, Lacie and Bryan got in last week and we got started cranking on their Advanced Open Water and Nitrox Courses. These guys were stoked to be diving here on Oahu and if Bryan has his way they might sell their home in Texas and move out here!!

We dived Turtle Canyons, Horseshoe Reef, The YO-257 wreck, Kewalo Pipe, The Corsiar Wreck and Anglers Reef. Pretty amazing set of dives and these two were stoked come Monday night when they finally finished it all.

I also had three Open Water students joining me in the waters off of Waikiki. Jeff, Sam and Jessica earned their stripes this weekend and are ready to join our dive club for more adventures. Hopefully Sam will send us some photos of NE Shipwrecks when she heads back to Cape Cod in a few weeks! Congrats to all the students this weekend and thanks so much for diving with Kaimana Divers..... here are some photos (big thanks to Matt for the last two)

OUTSTANDING!

That really is the only way I can describe my day of diving yesterday. I was met bright and early by Jose who is on R and R from Iraq. Throughout the years he has dived the world and is now a Rescue Diver! Congrats bro and thanks for serving...

While his wife and kids were sleeping in, Jose and I clocked two amazing Oahu scuba dives. First we jumped in at the wreck of the Seatiger and saw our resident frogfish, turtle, spotted eagle ray, undulated moray and even a dwarf moray. Next up was Horseshoe reef where my man got to cruise with an octopus, two sharks, a zebra moray, snowflake moray and countless other critters. The smile on his face was all the thanks I needed.... check out the photos!

I think I forgot to mention we saw some whales surfacing on our interval. I'm gonna miss those beasts when they cruise North for the summer. Big Mahalos to the crew aboard the Kahala Kai. I love my job....

Manta Ray on Oahu..... YESSS!!

Great day out on the water today....

Natalie brought her brothers Mark and Lars out diving and we had conditions that were perfecto for doing a set of drift dives. Captain Joe took us out in Hawaii Kai and on our first dive at Spitting Caves we spotted this little frogfish.... look how stoked Natalie looks!

While Mark was busy counting turtles on our next dive we were busy seeing the BIG GUY!!!! Who knew Oahu Scuba Diving could be this SWEET! Check out the video below....

Big Island Trip... 2008

Aloha Everyone,

Just a quick hello to let everyone know that we had a blast on the Big Island this past weekend. Some epic highlights include snorkeling with Pilot Whales and an Oceanic White Tip Shark, multiple Manta Rays and more healthy corals than you can shake a dive light at!

Big Mahalos to Capn' Chuck, DM Jeanine and Big Keith at Divetek Hawaii for making the trip one we FOKD'ers won't soon forget...

Dive Wrap Up for March...

So many great dives lately and lots of new friends...

First, check out the crew from the UK. They are sailing around the world and got to our fair islands last week. Nicola, John, Bernard and Gus all came out for a dive on Monday and we were amazed at that sight of a pod of 30 or so dolphins cruising past us!

More fun on Wednesday too as we headed out to Hawaii Kai with Jinger, Paul, Mary, Gus, Casey, Jason and Mat. With all the fun on the boat and whales singing in the background I almost didn't notice the other group turning green with seasickness!

Finally, this morning we headed out to the Seatiger Wreck with Lynn, Gus, Paul and Mary. One of the first thing that caught my eye was a handful of spotted eagle rays displaying their perfect formation for us just off the wreck. Another surprise was the Giant Trevally that sped past the bow!!!

One enormous frogfish, and 30 minutes later we were back on the boat. Just in time to catch some rays and drop back in at Horseshoe Reef. Lynn suggested we play scuba bingo after this epic shallow dive. In total our group saw two turtles, an octopus, one frogfish, several species of eel and the amazing Hawaiian Sting-Ray!

I can't thank everyone enough for taking me out scuba diving this week. Oahu diving always has something new to show us too. Scuba diving in Hawaii is always better than getting smacked in the face with a wet mahi-mahi so what are you waiting for?

Another Brilliant Westside Dive....

Aloha Everyone,

So stoked to be back on the island. Last weekend I headed out with Ski, Scott, Anna and Jak for a little fun on the westside. If you haven't been out for a scuba dive with us on the Westside, what are you waiting for (we'll be back out there this Sunday)!

Diving out of Waianae is always fun with Captain Scott. Sunday he took us to the wreck of the Mahi first and then over to Ulua Cave. We could hear the Humpback Whales singing as we dropped in on the wreck.... too bad my computer wasn't cooperating!

Plenty of cool critters here and at Ulua Cave too. We saw multiple turtles, 3 octopus a great collection of nudibranchs and my favorite eel on the island (he hides out in a crooked pipe on the Mahi).

Aloha Everyone,

Just been gearing up for the Big Island trip with a little R and R on the mainland. Michelle and I are on the road and have been to San Fran and Chicago already. This week we are in snowy Ohio visiting my 93 year old Grandmother.

It will be nice to get back to Oahu and get diving again though. I'm getting tired of 30 degree days and no Sun! Just a heads up that I will be conducting and Open Water course the first weekend in April and a Nitrox course Wed, March 26.

I Love My Job....

Aloha Everyone,

Just catchin up to let you all know that we have had some out of this world diving over the past few weeks. Not only have we been seeing Humpback Whales breach on the surface almost daily, but we have been hearing them singing non-stop.

Over the past few weeks I have been stoked to show a good crew of divers some of our best sites. Eagle Rays at the Sea Tiger, Sharks at Horseshoe Reef, Frogfish on Kewalo Pipe, Juiced up Morays at the Corsair, Schools of Barracuda @ Palea Point and countless other amazing finds.

Thanks to Jeff, Mat, Jamie, Mike, Michelle, Holly, Anna, Steve, Bret, Susy, Matt, Ski, Jeff and Chris for taking me diving. Finally, big congrats to Jen who finished her Open Water Course... hope you guys can make it for the Big Island trip!

Got tons of dives coming up so I should clear out the camera, huh?

Last week, college buddy Farmer and his lovely Jodi came out for a visit. These two came over last year and did a nice dive out on the westside. This time around we caught a beautiful day in Oahu and missed the Waikiki mess to board an afternoon charter out to Turtle Canyons.

They were both stoked too, check out the photos!

Some recent High-Lights....

We have had some solid dives lately and just wanted to give a shout out to some recent grads of Kaimana Divers courses:

1) Mark completed his Open Water here on Oahu and then took his skills over to the Big Island where he got to do the world famous Manta Ray Night Dive! Congrats on spotting 2 mantas bro and lets get your Advanced knocked out too.

2) Meg and Dave have completed their Advanced Open Water course and Nitrox course. Good thing too because they are off to Costa Rica to enjoy their long awaited Honeymoon. All the best guys...

3) Ben completed his Open Water course too... just in time to move back to the mainland. I want photos of those East Coast wrecks brosef.

Tons of great photos here.... Big thanks to Anna, Matt, Chris, Seah, JP, Neal, Nav, Ski, Rich, Hollie, Nate and Chris the Mac for taking me out on some of the best dives in recent memory.

Highlights include A Manta Ray, 2 Monk Seals, Dolphins, Sharks and almost every dive has been set to the soundtrack of Humpback Whales singing in the distance!

Two Monk Seals.... China Wall 1/8/07

It took some time, but I have the video all mixed down. Now, because some of the quality is lost with uploading it to youtube it looks a little bitmaped but I think you will get the point.

If anyone is interested I will keep an HD version on my computer. Thanks to Anna for the additional video clips. Pay particular attention to the sounds they make in the first clip, the kiss on the head and the air release by the larger of the two.

On Tuesday, Anna, Matt, JP and Seah boarded the Nori Z for what would soon become one of my top 5 dives of my life. After a great dive at our WWII Airplane wreck we headed over to Spitting Caves to do a drift dive.

Condtions were current with light south winds and little swell. The visibility was down a bit, but the glass like surface conditions made it impossible to stay away. Good thing too. A few minutes into the dive we spotted an octopus and then this.....

The above photos were takedn by Anna Curtis and Manini Max. I was too busy shooting video.... about 10 minutes total. I promise to have the video uploaded by next week. It is quite rare to see the Hawaiian Monk Seal and we were fortunate to see two! In total we spent about 15 minutes watching them interact!

New Year, catching up on dive reports....

Aloha everyone,

What a great holiday season. Tons of excellent diving and heaps of friends and fun. Anna brought her family out on Xmas eve and we had a great time exploring China Wall with Jamie diving too!

Last weekend, Michael and Griselda were out visiting from California. Also joining us was Jen who was stoked to get back into diving and enjoying the holiday here in paradise. A perfect day for Griselda to do her first dives of her life. We managed to see sharks, an octopus plenty of turtles and all sorts of other fun critters. Looks like they had fun!

A busy weekend followed too with Sean taking his family out for a dive on Saturday and Steve finishing his Open Water Course. Great dives too and it looked like Pete hadn't missed out on the last 40 years of not diving!

Sunday Holly, Anna, and Steve were treated to a rare find. A Manta Ray on our surface interval. Great time too with about 5 minutes of this 8 footer showing us her stuff. OF COURSE I DIDN'T BRING MY CAMERA!
